Song of the Day: Funkin’ for Jamaica (N.Y.), composed by jazz trumpeter Tom Browne, is a memoir to the Jamaica, Queens neighborhood of New York City. A #1 R&B hit and a Top Ten Dance Single, this “Jamaica Funk” track was blasting on New York City beaches in the summer of 1980. Browne was born on this date in 1954. Check out this soul-laden track and a nice discussion of its “genius bass” line as well [YouTube links].
