From my hospital bed on October 29, 2025, I posted a slideshow of photos I’d taken over a 12-month period from the window of my Brooklyn apartment to mark the one-year anniversary of my having moved into the Madison section of Sheepshead Bay. Bordered by Homecrest, Midwood, and the beautiful Marine Park, it is a lovely area in the borough of Kings. I called the slideshow, “Stills from a Brooklyn Window” [YouTube link], set to the Cole Porter classic, “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” performed by jazz vocalist Anita O’Day.
After having survived two emergency surgeries last October, I’m alive and kicking! And I continue to enjoy the lovely sights and sounds of my neighborhood. Changing seasons and special events—from the Cold Moon to the Hunter’s Moon, from the helicopters, Macy’s Fireworks, and local firework displays in honor of America 250 to the 25th Anniversary of 9/11—are all captured in this year’s iteration: “Stills from a Brooklyn Window II” [YouTube link].
This newest slideshow features more than 120 photos set to a different version of the same music theme from last year, performed by New York-born Kenny Rankin. Indeed, anytime I’m out, this place is “so nice to come home to.”
