Song of the Day #2345

Song of the Day: Day by Day, music by Axel Stordahl and Paul Weston, lyrics by Sammy Cahn, is a jazz standard that has been recorded by countless artists. Often called the “Father of Mood Music,” Weston was a co-founder of the National Academy for Recording Arts and Sciences in 1957. Two years later, the Academy created the Grammy Awards, which recognized outstanding achievements in music. Weston’s significant contributions to the music industry were noted in 1971 when he received a Grammy Trustees Award.

Thirty years ago on this date, Weston died of natural causes. Check out three renditions of this song: the first is a ballad by Weston’s wife, Jo Stafford; the second, a swinging Billy May arrangement for Frank Sinatra; and the third, a live finger-snappin’ rendition by Carmen McRae (with a group featuring guitarist Joe Pass) [YouTube links].
