Song of the Day: Dr. Kildaire (“Main Theme”), composed by the great Jerry Goldsmith, was heard on this NBC medical drama from 1961 through 1966. It starred Richard Chamberlain in the title role, for which he won a Golden Globe Award in 1962.

The show also starred Raymond Massey as the senior Dr. Leonard Gillespie. Massey had quite a career, from his leading role as “Abe Lincoln in Illinois” (1940), for which he received a Best Actor Oscar nomination to his comedic turn opposite Cary Grant in “Arsenic and Old Lace” (1944) and the role of Gail Wynand in the 1949 film adaptation of “The Fountainhead”. Chamberlain would go on to star in many classic TV productions.

With tomorrow’s Primetime Emmy Awards, check out this famous TV theme as shown on the series, as well as recordings by legendary tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, and Chamberlain himself, with lyrics by Hal Winn (aka “Three Stars will Shine Tonight”) [YouTube links].
