Song of the Day: Joy Spring, composed by the great jazz trumpeter Clifford Brown, was the artist’s signature tune. It was recorded twice by him in 1954, once on August 6, and again on August 12. The first studio session included such musicians as Harold Land on tenor sax and Max Roach on drums; the second session, arranged by Jack Montrose, included Zoot Sims (tenor sax) and Russ Freeman (piano). The song has become a jazz standard and was the title track to guitarist Joe Pass’s 1964 live Pacifc Jazz set (which wasn’t released until 1981).
