Song of the Day: Seven Steps to Heaven, composed by Victor Feldman and Miles Davis, is the title track to the Davis album, which was released on this date in 1963. The track features Davis on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. This was the first time that the Hancock-Carter-Williams rhythm section made its appearance in the Davis discography. In later years, two jazz vocalists added differing lyrics to this song: Jon Hendricks, who is featured along with singer Al Jarreau and trumpeter Till Bronner, on the Take 6 album, “The Standard“; and a different rendition by Cassandra Wilson, featured on her “Traveling Miles” tribute album.
