Song of the Day: Joy to the World, words and music by Hoyt Axton, was a #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit for Three Dog Night from their 1970 album, “Naturally“. When the composer first performed the song for band members Cory Wells and Danny Hutton, they rejected it. But with that opening lyric, “Jeremiah was a bullfrog,” vocalist Chuck Negron thought it was “silly” enough to be a hit. It would go on to be the #1 song of 1971. Negron died in February 2026; today would have been his 84th birthday. Listen to the “silly” song that became a rock staple [YouTube link].
