May is National Pet Month in the United States. It is a celebration of the bond between pets and people—a testament to the immense joy that pets bring to our lives. Through the years, the deep connection that I experienced with our family pets was a source of support, companionship, and love.
In today’s Substack essay, “Pet Love“, I explore my relationships to each of those pets—Buttons, Blondie, Dante, and Cali—as well as the meaningful place of pets in our lives. Along the way, I engage with the work of Nathaniel Branden, who enunciated the “Muttnik Principle”, derived from his interactions with his wire-haired fox terrier. Branden pinpointed the important role that psychological visibility plays in our relationship to pets and people.
