John Sterling, RIP

John Sterling

I have just learned that Yankees broadcast announcer John Sterling died this morning at the age of 87.

There have been many Yankees broadcasters on radio and television over the years, from Mel Allen and Red Barber to Phil Rizzuto, Bill White, and Frank Messer. Though the “Scooter”, Phil Rizzuto, was in the broadcast booth for 40 years, Sterling holds the record for the most Yankees games called. Over a 36-year period, from 1989 to 2024, he did the play-by-play for 5,060 consecutive games, and over 5,600 total games.

All fans will forever remember him as a unique Voice of the Yankees, especially his personalized home run calls for various players, including Bernie Williams (“Burn, Baby, Burn!”), Alex Rodriguez (“An A-bomb from A-Rod”), Robinson Cano (“Robbie Cano, don’t you know?”), and Aaron Judge (“All Rise”). And, of course, his thunderous radio call every time the Yankees won a game: “The Yankees win! Thuuhhh Yankees win!”

Rest in peace.
