Song of the Day: The Batman (“Highway to the Anger Zone”) [YouTube link], composed by Michael Giacchino, is one of highlights to an unrelentingly dark film and film score. (Giacchino even titles one of the cues, “Sonata in Darkness“.) This 2022 reboot of the Batman film franchise stars Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight. (One of its other cast members is Colin Farrell as Oz/The Penguin, who reprises that role in a 2024 spinoff series.) There are very few elements of levity in this film, though I did chuckle when mob boss Carmine Falcone (played by John Turturro) is in the Iceberg Lounge, while Al Martino‘s version of “I Have But One Heart” is playing in the background. Martino’s “Johnny Fontane” rendition is famously delivered during Connie’s wedding in “The Godfather” (1972). Giacchino’s “Batman” soundtrack has many fine moments. This tense cue opens up my 21st Annual Film Music February Festival. This year, I will be featuring a mix of the popular and the obscure, with both original cues and source music from 1929 to the current year.
