Song of the Day #2287

Song of the Day: Seven Nation Army features the words and music of Jack White and Meg White, who make up the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame duo, The White Stripes. If you’re not familiar with the song, you might be familiar with the bass line: It is chanted by fans in stadiums and arenas across the sports world. This is how that happened. Apparently, it started with Italian soccer fans in 2003, the year the song was released, and evolved into a pro sports phenomenon. The song, which was the opening track and lead single to the duo’s album, “Elephant“, was released on February 17, 2003 (my 43rd birthday, FWIW). It went on to win “Best Rock Song” at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards.

Today is the official Opening Day of Major League Baseball (including the New York Mets Home Opener) and we’ll be hearing that chant across the country. (Oh, and the New York Yankees blanked the Giants 7-0, as the teams kicked off the 2026 baseball season in San Francisco last night.) Check out the song’s official music video [YouTube link].
