This morning, I was devastated to learn of the death of Brian Doherty, senior editor at Reason magazine. Brian wrote a wonderful “freewheeling history of the modern American libertarian movement”, entitled Radicals for Capitalism (2007) . He also authored five other books, including This is Burning Man: The Rise of a New American Underground (2004). Over the years, his unique voice was heard in hundreds of publications, radio shows, and television broadcasts.
I always enjoyed chatting with Brian. He was a sweetheart of a guy. We last corresponded when he was working on an article about Steve Ditko, “The John Galt of Comic Books,” which appeared in the January 2026 issue of Reason.
I truly admired his Radicals for Capitalism volume for its breadth and depth. His kindness and generosity extended to various references to my work and to the inscription he wrote to me, one that I have always treasured—and will treasure for the rest of my life.
I will miss him dearly. My very deepest condolences to his friends and family.
