Song of the Day: We’ve Only Just Begun, words and music by Paul Williams and Roger Nichols, was a huge hit for The Carpenters in 1970, from their second studio album, “Close to You.” It topped four Billboard charts, and went to #2 on the Hot 100. On this date in 1950, Karen Carpenter was born. Known for her sensitive, intimate vocals, Carpenter died tragically at the age of 32 in 1983, due to complications from Anorexia nervosa. The original Carpenters rendition is a classic. For an instrumental rendition, there’s a recording by Michel Legrand and alto saxophonist Phil Woods, from their 1975 Grammy Award-winning album, “Images.” And for an extra treat, check out a sweet medley of standards performed live by Karen Carpenter and Ella Fitzgerald [YouTube links].
