James’s swing and technical skill is on full display here; it’s the kind of fiery performance that nearly sent my mother flying off the balcony of the Brooklyn Paramount Theater when she saw him live back in the 1940s. On this date in 1919, Mom was born and her love lives on in so many ways, including the music, artists, and films she introduced us to. My love eternal.
