Song of the Day: When The Saints Go Marching In is a traditional black spiritual that became a jazz standard in no small measure because of the efforts of Louis Armstrong, who was born on this date in 1901. A native of New Orleans, Armstrong was a beloved ambassador of jazz and one of its most influential and iconic figures. Check out his original 1938 recording of this song, a live 1968 performance on the BBC, and his rambunctious live rendition from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, immortalized in the 1959 concert film, “Jazz on a Summer’s Day” [YouTube links]. What a perfect film title for a Summer Day, indeed.
