In my ongoing YouTube blitz featuring the performances of my brother, jazz guitarist Carl Barry, and my sister-in-law, vocalist Joanne Barry, today I’ve uploaded Joanne’s album, “Embraceable You” (Fat Note Records, 1998). Unlike “Holding On” (Stash Records, 1984), which featured mostly original compositions, this album contains songs primarily from The Great American Songbook. Joanne performs these songs with a diverse group of musicians in a variety of settings, led by my brother Carl.

The selections include:

  1. You Don’t Know What Love Is (Don Raye / Gene de Paul)
  2. My Favorite Things (Richard Rodgers / Oscar Hammerstein II)
  3. The Island (Ivan Lins / Vitor Martins / Alan and Marilyn Bergman)
  4. Autumn Leaves (Jacques Prévert / Joseph Kosma / Johnny Mercer)
  5. Embraceable You (George and Ira Gershwin)
  6. Hearts Take Time (Kye Fleming / Janis Ian)
  7. I’ve Got it Bad and That Ain’t Good (Duke Ellington / Paul Webster)
  8. A Beautiful Friendship (S. Styne / D. Kahn)
  9. Alone in the World (Jerry Goldsmith / Alan and Marilyn Bergman)
  10. That’s All (Alan Brandt / Bob Haymes)
  11. Empty Faces (aka “Vera Cruz”) (Milton Nascimento / Lani Hall)
  12. My Funny Valentine (Richard Rodgers / Lorenz Hart) Featuring

In addition to Carl on guitar, the personnel includes Michael Morreale on trumpet and fluegelhorn, Tony Aiello on saxophones (alto, tenor, and soprano), bassists Steve LaSpina and Tim Lekan, drummers Mike Hyman, John Clay, and Paul Jost, Tony Regusis on Synthesizer, and Jeff Berman on Percussion. “Alone in the World”, the theme song to the 1990 MGM film, The Russia House, features guest guitar soloist Jack Wilkins.

The album was arranged and produced by Carl Barry.
