The Snowman is Baaaack!!! This time, he’s dressed for St. Patrick’s Day! In addition to the shamrocks and green, this year’s display is accented by a new pot of beloved yellow Daffodils. Daffodils in these parts are omnipresent at this time of year—so much so that they have become the ‘official flower’ of New York City. In the days after 9/11, in acknowledgment of the flower’s importance to the New York landscape, Dutch growers donated over 1 million Daffodil bulbs to the city as “the world’s largest living memorial.” This year, as in previous years, more than 10 million Daffodils are blooming throughout the five boroughs, amid conditions that are often too cold or too harsh for other flowers. They are a symbol of this city’s strength and resilience.

But the Daffodil also has a very special place in my heart. Every March, for over 40 years, I brought home a pot of these harbingers of spring as a gift to my sister. Though she’s been gone for over two years now, I still find a way to bring them home. Now living in a new Brooklyn neighborhood, it required a little extra effort, but it didn’t take me long to find Daffodils at Theo the Tulip on the day of their Grand Opening!

Love springs eternal.
