Song of the Day: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (“Soundtrack Suite”), music by Carmen Dragon, includes those quintessential horror outbursts that punctuate so many of the tense scenes in this classic Don Siegel-directed 1956 film, starring Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter. There have been other adaptations of this film, which was itself an adaptation of Jack Finney‘s 1954 novel, “The Body Snatchers” (no relation to yesterday’s Song of the Day entry). However, this chilling, original film version remains one of my all-time favorites. Whether intended or not, the film is rich with political subtext that was as damning to the loss of personal autonomy under communism as it was to the anti-communist paranoia and stultifying conformity of the McCarthy era (Kevin had no relation to Joe). A classic score for a classic film!
