I’ve highlighted the work of Winton Bates before on Notablog.
Today, on his Freedom and Flourishing blog, Winton asks: “Is it helpful to adopt a dialectical approach to problem definition?” Utilizing my understanding of dialectics as the art of context-keeping, Winton offers interesting examples of how various people, in their attempts to grapple with—and resolve—social problems, often drop context.
A resistance to examining problems as embedded within a larger context understood across time often leads to a distorted understanding of these problems—and an even more distorted grasp of the kinds of solutions that are possible, given the conditions that exist.
Check out Winton’s worthwhile discussion here.
